Baby polar bear naps with her teddy bear
This baby polar bear is fast asleep, and she has company: a teddy bear in a little knitted sweater. more
She sleeps on a pink bedspread covered in little elephants, with the stuffed bear right beside her. Her first days were much harder than this.
SaveShe was born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Powell, Ohio, and her mother rejected her at birth. Zoo staff said the mother seemed depressed. She ignored the tiny cub and didn't nurse her.
Polar bears sometimes turn away cubs that look weak when they are born. Grown polar bears are the largest predators on land, but a newborn is small and helpless. With her mother not caring for her, the job of keeping the cub going fell to the people at the zoo.
The cub turned out to be a strong one. She gets a little stronger with each new day, and she is growing into the big polar bear she was meant to be, thanks to the zoo staff who stepped in when her mother would not.
