A foster pit bull puppy with a big cheesy grin
Amanda kept telling people what her foster puppy could do, and nobody believed her. So she got out her phone. more
The puppy was Herbert, a five-month-old pit bull mix, and Amanda was fostering him for PAWS Chicago, a no-kill animal rescue. He had been abused before he came to her. Now he was about to prove her right.
Herbert, white with black markings, sits calmly on a checkered rug and looks up at her. She tells him to say cheese. His face lights up and out comes a row of teeth, in a grin far wider than any dog has a right to.
SaveThen it's over. A moment later he is just a white puppy in a black collar again, looking up at her with dark eyes. From start to finish, it all happens in about nine seconds.
SavePeople read a lot into a dog's smile, and with Herbert it is hard not to. A short time in a loving home had already turned this rescue dog into a happy pet. Not an ordinary one, though. Most dogs do not grin like this.
SaveEven with that grin, it took some time to find Herbert a home. Then a couple decided to bring him into their lives, and now he has plenty to grin about.
