Monkey the kitten and his friend the deer
He came home at 6 weeks old, with legs so tiny that his person carried him along the trails on her shoulder. Monkey the kitten did not stay up there for long. more
At first he wanted to be held all the time. Monkey was a snuggle bug who would cuddle up to anybody, and he wanted to be wherever she was.
SavePretty soon he was walking all the way through the creek with her. Now he is Mr. Independent. Try to pick him up and he won't have it, because in his own mind he is a big boy. He went, as she puts it, from wanting to be held all the time to “no, no, no, no, I can do this.”
He isn't scared of anything, deer included. Buttons has always roamed free on their land, and she brings her babies up to the house. Monkey walks right up to the fawns for a better look, then goes over and snuggles Buttons.
SaveViewers caught how rare that is. Most wild animals run at the sight of people, one pointed out, so a deer who brings her fawns around is showing real trust. Others couldn't get over the hikes, where the cats keep up on the trail with no leash at all.
Not everyone at home was sold at first. Mango, the older cat, had been very close with his sister. After she died, he would go out on their trails and cry, looking for her. The family brought Monkey home to give Mango someone to love, and Mango didn't warm up to him right away.
It didn't take long. Mango started loving on the kitten, and everyone just went “aw.” He's back to himself now, and the two of them are hiking buddies.
Save“The hole that he mended in Mango's heart, he mended in my heart, too,” she says. They got Monkey to bring Mango joy. There turned out to be plenty to go around.
