Rooney the corgi turned out to be a cat person
Every time she sees a cat, Rooney the corgi gets so excited that her mom, Natalie, starts to think about bringing one home. more
Natalie tests the idea by fostering first. Rooney is afraid of the foster kittens, and yet she keeps wanting to be near them.
One of those kittens, Olive, stays on when her brother goes back. She and Rooney click, playing together and leaping from spot to spot. Rooney grows so attached that Natalie can't take Olive back. 'Really, it's her cat,' she says.
SaveNatalie waits a while before fostering a second litter, two black kittens who don't know what to make of a corgi. They are easy to get attached to, and both stay for good. 'We totally foster failed,' she says, which is rescue talk for keeping the pets you meant to foster.
Rooney goes everywhere Natalie goes, boats and planes included, and she swims in the ocean. 'She's more of a people person than I am,' Natalie says. Olive is wilder, and Natalie thinks she was feral, but even with the other kittens around, she and Rooney stick together.
SaveThe two newer kittens are calmer and very social, and funny in their own ways. Nai'a picks up little sticks and dead leaves and carries them around like a dog, something Natalie had never seen a cat do. Bobbie, she says, is 'the snuggliest little bug in the entire world.'
Natalie's boyfriend once had a cat who went hiking with him, his adventure kitty, so the couple takes all four animals to the beach. Rooney becomes the kittens' safe space out there, and she is all over them on the sand. Olive is less happy about the outing.
SaveBack home, it's Olive's turn to get all of Rooney's attention. Three kittens at once can feel like having a toddler, Natalie says, all 'put that down' and 'don't eat that.' They also bring a little more love into the house, and as she puts it, she ended up with three small dogs that purr.
