Pit bull plays nurse to a sick rescue kitten
Found in a parking lot, Violet was a tiny kitten in rough shape. Once he was safe at her house, his rescuer could see he was even worse off than she had thought. more
His eyes looked terrible, and he didn't feel well at all. He really just wanted to sleep and eat and relax, a plan plenty of people can respect. Even so, he was sweet from the start, making biscuits with his paws from the very first day.
He seemed determined to get better from day one. By day two he was eating and drinking well. "This cat is gonna do this," she remembers thinking. "We're gonna do this."
By day four he still had mange, but he was clearly feeling a lot better. Six days in, he was out of fight-or-flight mode and starting to thrive. Once he felt really good, it was time to meet everybody.
Of everyone in the house, Violet connected most with Chapo, the family pit bull. There is just something about a kitten that Chapo really loves. She had worried that Violet would never want to hang out with him, and she was proven wrong. Violet snuggled up to Chapo, then kept doing it, walking over again and again to lie down next to him.
SaveSoon the two were kissing and playing together. Then, about two weeks in, Violet came down with a pretty brutal upper respiratory infection.
Chapo was incredibly concerned. Instead of trying to play the way he normally would, he just sat there and checked on Violet every five seconds, making sure he was okay. "Chapo has definitely been a great nurse to Violet," she says.
SaveViolet got through it, and now the two get along beautifully. They sleep together and really enjoy each other's company. Every kitten needs some kind of mom to look up to, she says. Chapo taught Violet "how to be a pet, how to be an animal, how to thrive in his new body."
