The porch gate opens for a black bear cub

Patrick Conley lives near a deep forest, and a black bear named Simone has been visiting his home for a while with her two cubs, Milo and Luca. On this visit, they head for the porch. more

Simone climbs up onto the porch with Milo. Luca is not so lucky. He can't get over the porch railing, and he tumbles down the stairs.

So Patrick walks over and opens the gate for him. Simone stays calm while he does it. Luca, still scared, comes in and joins the rest of his family.

By then Simone has found the bird feeder hanging from the ceiling. She pulls on it so hard that one of the strings snaps, and the treats spill all over the floor. The cubs are delighted. It's a fair split, as these things go: Mom gets the feeder and the kids get the floor.

Simone takes a seat up on the porch railing next, legs hanging down, as steady as a gymnast on a beam. Milo and Luca wander around the porch and its posts as if they own the place.

With treats on the floor, Milo and Luca roam the porch while Simone sits on the railing.

After a while she stands at the front of the porch, then leads the cubs off toward the main yard. She checks under an unused bridge for food, then all three wander toward another house.

In the end Simone changes her plan. She takes Milo and Luca back home to the forest.
