Whatever this blind puppy touches is his
Rocky Kanaka has a simple rule when he takes a homeless dog shopping. Whatever the dog touches, he buys. This time the shopper is Kobe, a blind Cane Corso puppy. more
Kobe can't see, and he has heart trouble as well. Ty, who runs a dog rescue, is trying to find out whether Kobe's eyesight can be repaired. For now Rocky just hopes the puppy lives up to his namesake, Kobe Bryant, and goes for the win.
The first try doesn't go well. Rocky says go, and Kobe takes a few steps into the strange store and plops down on the floor. So the toys come to him instead, starting with an orange squeaker, the first toy he has ever had.
He can't reach the shelves, so a bunch of toys go down in the aisle. Kobe passes most of them by. "He just wants one duck," Rocky says, and the duck and the squeaker go in the cart. One viewer noticed his stubby tail wagging every time a toy squeaked.
The treat aisle is another story, because Kobe can smell it. He finds a bone almost as big as he is, then goes for the whole box and tries to pull it off the shelf. "You want the whole box? Sold," Rocky says, laughing that he has never seen a dog buy the whole box before.
SaveNot everything wins him over. When Rocky offers a long bully stick, Kobe barks at it and backs away, doing his best to sound fierce. "You don't like that, okay," Rocky says, and puts it back. The bully stick has him all worked up, and pretty soon somebody is ready for a nap.
Then comes a game. Ty gets three rings to toss at prizes for the rescue, with one rule: Kobe has to stay in Ty's arms the whole time, and the puppy is heavy. A ring lands on a pricey carrier, and Kobe ends up inside it, just the right spot for that nap. His total comes to $364.38, and Rocky says he is out of money.
Kobe isn't the only shopper. Penelope, a special needs dog, zips through the aisles in her little wheelchair and touches her way to a new bed. Miss Piggy, still waiting to be adopted, buys less than Rocky expected. His theory is that she would rather buy Ty.
