Chained for years, this fox terrier still wags
Viktor Larkhill gets a call about a dog who needs help fast. The dog his team finds is a fox terrier, chained to a wall, and she has been there for years. more
The yard around her is full of machines and old car parts. Nobody has been looking after her, and the people who left her there never even gave her a name. Her coat is matted and her eyes are sad. A large lump on her back end hurts when anyone touches it, and she cries and moans, desperate for affection.
Then one of the rescuers kneels and strokes her head, and her tail starts to wag. After all those years on a chain, she still wags at the sight of people.
SaveThat wag is what stays with people. She has been given almost no love, and she still has plenty to give. If she is this sweet after a life on a chain, she should be wonderful in a real home.
The rescuers unhook the chain from the wall. For the first time in years she leaves that yard, and she goes straight to the hospital.
SaveThere she finally gets a name, Maria. The staff shave a small patch on her leg to draw blood, then shave part of her belly so they can look inside with an ultrasound.
Her condition is serious, and she'll need surgery to remove the lump. Whatever comes next, she'll face it as Maria, with a name of her own and people on her side.
