Under a freeway, a poodle shields his sister

Two poodles have been scraping by for weeks in a tunnel under the I-5 freeway in California. When Hope for Paws gets the call, the rescuers head out right away. more

Eldad, who founded Hope for Paws, brings his friend Vanessa Enriquez along. They find the dogs inside the tunnel and block one end. Then they drive around to the far side of the freeway and crawl in from there.

The poodles hear footsteps and run to hide in a corner, but they're found soon enough. The brother has no idea what these people want. So he covers his sister with his larger body.

The rescuers hold out a hamburger. Neither dog will touch it, which says how frightened they are. So Eldad and Vanessa settle in and go slowly, sitting in the tunnel and working to earn the sister's trust.

In the end the two of them are sitting in a pile of dust, reaching out a hand to pet her. It works. Once the poodles decide these two can be trusted, they perk up fast and are ready to leave.

It's a long way out, and the brother doesn't let his guard down. He wants to be sure his sister is safe.

At the shelter the pair get cleaned up, shaved and fed, then a proper bath. Under all that grime are two curly white poodles who look pleased with the new arrangement.

Somewhere in the makeover they get their names, Pepsi and Cola. Plenty of people who saw the rescue say they gave money to help, and many share one wish for whoever adopts the pair: take them both.
