The pit bull who made milk for a magpie

When Juliette and her partner found the magpie, she was weak and covered in grass. So they brought her home, where their pit bull, Peggy, would not go near her. more

That bird was Molly. Juliette kept an eye on the two of them, unsure how they would get along, and Peggy's caution didn't last. She went closer and closer, then started sniffing Molly's feet. All the attention Juliette and her partner were paying this little one made her curious.

Peggy kept edging nearer to the magpie until she was sniffing her feet.

At first they lay near each other without touching, both of them close to Juliette. Then one day she looked down and found them snuggled together on the floor. From then on, they were never apart. They even ate together.

Juliette didn't notice it at first, but Peggy was producing milk. She told her partner she thought Peggy might be pregnant, so they took her to the vet.

Peggy wasn't pregnant. The vet called it a phantom pregnancy for the little bird, and said it is quite common for a dog to make milk, especially when she is caring for something.

Peggy grew very protective of Molly, and Molly will sit on her back and go to sleep there. Wherever Peggy goes, Molly follows. She copies everything Peggy does, right down to how she plays with each toy. Juliette believes Molly thinks Peggy is her mum.

Peggy has always loved sitting in the yard, looking at the trees and the birds, and Molly does the same. They groom each other out there. Peggy picks at Molly's feathers, and if Molly sees food on Peggy's face, she takes it off. When it rains, the two of them sit together and watch it.
