Husky named Blaze says no to kennel time

It's kennel time, and Blaze the Siberian husky has other plans. He lies flat on the wooden floor and makes it plain he is not going anywhere. more

His person stands over him and keeps things friendly. "I think it's time to go in the kennel," he says. "Come on." Blaze looks up at him from the floorboards and doesn't move a paw.

Told it is time for his kennel, Blaze lies down and looks up instead.

So the man asks again. And again. "Kennel time. Kennel time. Come on." Blaze answers with a groan and stays right where he is.

Next the man leans down close, right by the doorway. Getting nearer doesn't help. Blaze stays put and keeps talking back, and some of those groans come out sounding a lot like "no."

His person leans in by the doorway, and Blaze still won't budge.

For a while he stops looking up. His chin rests on the floor near the rug, black harness on, his whole body set like a sack of flour. The asking goes on above him.

Blaze rests his head by the rug while the kennel talk carries on above him.

The man hears it too. "That's what he said," he points out. "Said no." He is not wrong. The groan really does seem to have two letters in it.

The best moment comes about a minute in. Blaze lifts his head, looks the man square in the face and gives one more "no," calm as a judge. That look is the one people keep going back to.

Then the man tries a new angle. "You love your kennel," he tells him. "You love your kennel." Blaze doesn't buy it, and the last word goes to the man: "Oh my god."

Plenty of people see themselves in Blaze, flat on the floor and groaning at the thought of getting up for school. Whether he ever made it to the kennel, nobody gets to find out.
