She was a small gray poodle, and she was scared stiff. She wouldn't budge. Still, as one rescuer talked to her, her tail began to thump. "Oh, you're whacking your tail," the rescuer tells her. "Come on, it's okay."

Bits of food brought her closer. When she started to slip away, a rescuer caught her by the leg and held on while she fought to get free. She looked like she needed medical care, so letting go was not an option. "I'm sorry I grabbed you," the rescuer keeps saying. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry."

Once she calmed down, the leash went on. Then someone noticed she had milk. "She's lactating for sure," one of them says. Somewhere close by, there had to be a puppy.

They followed where she was going and stepped with care, since a puppy might be under the mat. And there he was, one puppy, curled up and crying for his mom. "My God," a rescuer says. He was only just born.

A litter of one is unusual, so they tried a trick one of them came up with years ago. Let the mom walk around, and if there are more babies, she'll lead you to them. She kept going back to the same spot, and only that one.

Mother and son both went in for medical care, and both are doing well. Later, a woman with blonde hair hugs the little gray dog, her eyes shut and her face tipped up.
