Three stray puppies and a mom who was a dad
The call to Hope For Paws sounded like a routine dog rescue. A stray mother and her puppies were living in a steelyard in Compton, in Los Angeles. more
The rescuers spotted the dogs almost as soon as they arrived, which told them where to look. None of the puppies had ever been handled by people, and they were jumpy. The mother was nowhere in sight.
SaveThey found her hiding inside one of the pipes. The plan was to catch her first and hope the puppies would follow. She was caught quickly. "You're such a good girl," a rescuer told her, "and your puppies are right here."
The puppies were another matter. All three were scared. The first yelped and fought being caught, then calmed down in a rescuer's arms. The second was the easy one.
The third shot out of the yard and into the street. The rescuers coaxed him back in, where he squeezed himself into a tight spot before they finally got hold of him.
At the animal hospital, someone took a proper look at the mother. She was a he. In the rush to catch everyone, nobody had checked, and the dog raising these puppies was their dad. So much for good girl.
SaveThere was no sign of the real mother. The steelyard owners promised to call if she turned up.
All four dogs were bathed, cleaned up and checked over. Dad had done a fine job looking after his kids, and the puppies clearly love to play with him. "He's such a good dad," one rescuer says.
Everyone got a name. The dad became Wonton, and his pups became Ravioli, Noodle and Macaroni, which had commenters joking that someone was hungry. Hope For Paws went looking for one home for the whole family, Wonton included.
