After the boat sank, his pit bull went to church
Steve lives on a boat anchored off Sausalito, California, with his pit bull, Daisy. When a big storm hits, he leaves her aboard to go help a friend, one of the few times she has not been at his side. more
When he gets back, all he can see is the mast sticking up out of the water. Everything Steve owns and loves was on that boat, and that includes Daisy.
He likes to say he is the one who brings the dog food, the walks and the baths, and anything else she tells him she needs. "I'm just the flunky," he jokes. Now he figures he may never see her again.
Daisy gets off the sinking boat. She swims a mile and a quarter to shore in the middle of the storm, in the dark. Then she finds her way to the Sausalito Presbyterian Church, curls up and waits for somebody she knows.
SaveShe knows the place well. The church is where she and Steve sometimes get a free meal. A woman from the church finds her on the steps, wet and shivering, and calls the Rev. Paul Mowry.
On Friday night Steve comes in for one of those meals. Paul walks up and asks him about the name on his dog's microchip. Then he tells him she's alive. "I cried so hard," Steve says.
SaveWhat makes Daisy special, he says, is that she knew where to go to find him. He lost his home and everything in it, and he has come to think the finer things in life are as small as Daisy and her love. He needs God, and he needs Daisy.
For now the two of them are staying on a friend's boat. It's a dog's life, but Steve will tell you it is still a good one.
