Four Maine Coon kittens, newborn to first snow

Luna starts with four newborns and a great deal of cleaning to do. One hundred days later her Maine Coon kittens are playful young cats watching their first snow. more

Idun, Thor, Freya and Grim spend their first days in a pen, and their mother is never more than a paw's reach away. Luna washes and guards them while they pile together for warmth. Their ears are tiny, which won't last.

In the first days Luna keeps her newborns close, and they press together to keep warm.

Before long the four start to look like four different cats. Freya has an orange stripe down her forehead, a gift from her father, who makes an appearance and is every bit as handsome as Luna. Thor is the spitting image of his mother. All of them have paws that look a size too big, and they fill out fast.

Once they can walk, they want to see everything. One longtime fan remembers Freya as the escape artist, the one who slipped out of the pen, ran from her mother and hid under the sofa where Luna couldn't reach. Another favorite moment is quieter: a kitten licking Luna, returning the favor.

Weaning comes, and the four discover solid food at the same time. They also wash themselves in unison, as if someone had called a drill. There's a scratching post to work out and a hammock that somehow fits all four of them.
